Medical Staff
The medical staff at TVH is a dedicated team of Veterinarians and Veterinary Technicians. Both the Vets and Techs are responsible for the care of your pet while they are in the hospital.
Dr. Gwen Mowbray-Cashen

I’m Dr. Gwen. I guess you could say veterinary medicine is in my blood since both my parents (Mac and Alison) are veterinarians. I started working in an animal hospital at age twelve – cleaning kennels. I went to the NSAC for one year and continued my studies at the University of Guelph’s Ontario Veterinary College. After graduation with honors in 1985, I worked in a multi-vet practice in Ottawa doing mostly emergency medicine. The four years in Ottawa gave me many interesting and challenging cases to start my career. I also met my husband, Chris, who worked as a kennel attendant while doing his B.A. at Carlton University. In 1989, we moved to NS to work in my mother’s practice while she took a sabbatical. In 1990, I bought the practice and since then I have really found my niche. I enjoy working with people to make their pet’s lives better. I have a special interest in dentistry and animal behavior but I also enjoy internal medicine cases especially with older pets.

I have always had a strong connection with animals in my life. As a child, we always had four or more dogs in our home. My part time job at the hospital enabled me to have a horse in my teenage years. The presence of the animals in my life has been vital to my well being. They have taught me many things about life. Currently, my family includes our cats: Barbarella and Sylvester McMonkey McBean and numerous fish. They are helping us teach our children, Tara and Quinn about some of the better things in life. When the children get a little older, we will have some dog friends again in our home.

Dr. Adva Barkai-Ronayne

I'm Dr. Adva. I was born in Israel. When I was growing up I had many pets: 4 dogs, 4 cats, a duck and 2 horses. To our permanant residents we frequently added rescued animals such as sick cats, dogs, crows, a falcon and many more. Going to vet school was therefore a natural decision for me to make. I studied veterinary medicine at the university of Kosice, Slovakia. This is an old university with a long tradition of teaching medicine.

I started my studies in 1991 in the 1st year of the English program. I enjoyed my studies very much and also the experience of living in a big Eastern European city. I graduated in 1997 and married my husband in Dartmouth. We moved to the U.S A for a few years and in 1999 I traveled to London, U.K. to do a MSc in Wild Animal Health. In 2000 I returned to Canada, finished my licencing exams and started working as a substitute (locum) vet in Halifax, Labrador and Toronto.

In September 2004 I came to work at Truro Vet for 4 weeks while Drs. Gwen and Jen took their vacations, when they returned they asked me to stay on permanently. Now you can find me at the clinic 3 days a week. I commute from Bedford where I live with my husband Jude, son Ben, and cat Victor. I am currently on maturnity leave, waiting for the birth of my twins.

I'm Doctor Julia. I was born addicted to animals! I laugh when I say that to people, but it really is true. From the time that I was 3 years old I knew that I wanted to be a veterinarian. Over the years I've lived in many places: South Carolina, England, Colorado, Alberta, Nova Scotia and PEI. My life has taken the "great circle route" as they say, with a family early on, a career as a horseback riding instructor and draftsman then onto vet school the same year that my son, Richard, went off to University. After graduating from the Atlantic Veterinary College in 2005, I moved back to South Carolina to a mixed practice. However, my heart remained in the Maritimes and I was most fortunate to get the opportunity to join the team at the Truro Veterinary Hospital and return to my adopted home.

People and their pets are my passion. My own furry family consists of 1 dog - Nikko, a Border Collie Terrier mix, 2 cats - Percival and Precious (I did not give her that name, honest!), a horse - Bonnie and a donkey named Wanda. Playing in the garden, working with the horse and donkey or jogging with the dog are all favorite past-times outside of work.
